The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has adopted new technology to bridge the existing gap between its four campuses.
The university will start video conferencing lectures to enjoin all its four campuses by the end of the next academic year and the process will take three years to be fully operational in all the campuses.
According to the University Rector, Dr. Ahmad Kawessi Senggendo, initially the beneficiary programs under this project will be Bachelors of Medicine at Habib Medical School in Kampala, Computer Science and Information Technology. The program will start with the main campus in Mbale and Kibuli campus in Kampala.
He said the system will enable the university reduce on the costs of the administration like transportation and accommodation of lecturers.
He also urged lecturers to embrace the system as it is not meant to replace them for the services they are offering.
“The system will enable us to link with several academicians all over the world. For example the Habib Medical School always hosts various doctors and professors from abroad which is expensive, with this system they can conduct the lectures wherever they are,” said Dr Senggendo.
Dr. Senggendo revealed in a special interview that the university had started the project by paying the new internet service providers Research and Education Network for Uganda (RENU).
He said RENU is to start cabling the network from town to campus in Nkoma and by the end of this semester, the internet will be readily available for the university.
Dr. Sengendo said the system was delayed due to funding problems as most of its Middle East donors were distracted with the instability in their countries.
