From the 8th of December, the African Debate Society initiated a continental debate on the theme of Promoting the New African Narrative and was hosted by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana.
The 8-day debate consisted of over 80 debate teams from 14 African nations. Uganda was represented by Islamic university in Uganda and Makerere University with funding from Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa. The teams undertook 9 preliminary rounds from which only 32/80 teams qualified for the next stage.
The Pan African Universities Debate Championship (PAUDC/Akofena 2019) aimed to equip students across Africa with important advocacy and critical thinking skills while crowning the new champions of African University Debating. The competition uses the British Parliamentary format.
Ntambi Michael Blair, a law student from Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Kampala Campus, with two gold medals, was crowned 8th best public speaker on the continent at this debate and also named best public speaker from Uganda.
Blair has also been on the winning spree this year 2019 having been crowned best speaker and winner of the Ministry of Finance – Accountability Sector Debates in October.
Among other debaters were Luyombo Abbas and Awino Mercy (the duo that won East African Universities Debating Championship 2018) from Makerere who missed by an inch and Michelle Mawanda from IUIU.
