The Education Minister and First Lady, Janet Kataaha Museveni while appearing on NTV Uganda Monday night said that she’ll stand for president if God tells her to do so.
“I’ll wait on the Lord when what he tells me is what I will do. I’ve trained myself to wait and listen to the Lord,” Mrs Museveni told the interview.
Below is the full interview;
On how she joined politics
I don’t regret being in politics because I’m in service to God.
I never thought I’d find myself in politics. I used to thank God for that because I believed I wasn’t cut out for it but here I am trying to explain sometimes doesn’t help. We do what we can, say what we ought to say and leave it at that.
Our family has been misunderstood for many things. We have served with dedication and sincerity. We don’t think about ourselves first.
On the Muhoozi project
A mother doesn’t speak for a man. You can speak to Muhoozi himself. I can not speak to him.
On whether she’ll stand for President
I’ll wait on the Lord when what he tells me is what I will do. I’ve trained myself to wait and listen to the Lord.
On youth unemployed
We are trying to do skills devt for graduates to employ themselves and I hope we’ll be able to make some impact.
There’s a lot of unemployment but also Ugandans don’t want to do the jobs that are available.
Youths are into drugs and homosexuality and we’ll have to draw new campaigns to deal with the challenge of HIV/AIDS
It will take time for our education to get to perfect. We have weaknesses among our teachers, civil servants.
On sanitary pads for rural girls
I can’t think of a partnership that will be able to sustain a programme to provide pads every year.
Govt must provide those pads when we do across the whole country. We need a reasonable amount of money
Our hands are tied as a ministry that must work under a budget. We have to wait.
The president has not forgotten his pledge. It will be fulfilled at this point. Just not now
I did say that pads were not provided because we got a budget cut. That’s how govts work.
Some of the MPS actually said providing pads to girls would cripple the economy and they said this in private.
On food flasks, I think I was misunderstood. And I said for those that want their children to pack warm lunch, a food flask would be ideal.
The easiest thing to do was for families to pack lunch for their children regardless of whatever lunch.
What we’re not doing is inspect our schools which is something being done for private schools.
On teachers’ salaries
The salaries govt teachers receive is better than that of teachers in private schools
We’re training teachers so they can be of better quality and ultimately good quality students.
We are working on the weaknesses in the education sector and getting better everyday.
We must allow ourselves to work within our means as a sector and as a country
What we get is not a bad percentage from the total budget but of course we’d do better if we had more.
