Former Makerere University Guild President Julius Kateregga has withdrawn from the KCCA speakership race, Campus Bee has learnt. According to a post shared on Kateregga’s social media platforms on Tuesday, the former Makerere Guild President has withdrawn and decided to support Makindye Councillor Zahara Luyiika who happens to be the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer.
Kategregga, who was running as an independent further revealed that he made the decision after constant engagement with NUP senior party members.
‘After constant engagement with the Senior Party Members, Religious Leaders and Other Opinion Leaders. I withdraw my Candidacy for Speakership of the City.I give full Support to Our NUP flag bearer Madam Zahara Luyurika.” Kateregga posted.
Kateregga, who also doubles as Makerere Lord councilor was going to battle Rubaga North’s Hakim Kizza and Counsel Jeremiah Keeya Mwanje for the speakership position.
Rumours making rounds in the city indicate that NUP had allowed Kateregga to run as an independent after reports emerged that Luyiika secured funding from the ruling government.
