The Speaker of Parliament Dr. Rebecca Kadaga today graced and addressed Victoria University students during Social Innovations Africa Forum that was organised by Hedge at the Victoria University premises on Jinja Road in Kampala.
Kadaga shared a plan by the government to start-up an Independent Ministry of Technology to deal with innovations that are crafted by the youth. “The Government of Uganda is planning to establish an Independent Ministry of Technology that will be dealing with innovations that are being created by the young people of this country.” she said.
It is the Ministry of Education that is currently hosting the Technology part but she (Kadaga) believes that an independent body can handle that.
The students were promised a great opportunity to be able to innovate fully well knowing that their efforts will not go to waste. While at the occasion, Kadaga noted that an independent ministry will help increase government funding towards the sector hence giving a hand to Ugandans who always come up with great innovations like mobile and web applications.
Social Innovations Africa Forum is a platform that brings together social innovators to tackle the greatest challenges that affect Africa. The theme for the day was ‘Social & Business Transformation through Technology & Innovation’ which was aimed at helping students have a platform to freely innovate and explore a lot more ideas.
The speaker further discussed Sustainable Development Goals in Africa by 2030, Innovations & their Key role in achieving #Africa2030, Social enterprise & the impact of social entrepreneurship.
The excitement on the student’s faces could tell it all that they had greatly welcomed the idea and are much willing to explore and bring more innovation.
