Nandala Ismail Muzamiru has emerged winner of a highly contested Islamic University in Uganda main campus guild race.
Mr. Nandala, a second year student of Bachelor in Development Studies and from Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences(FASS), was declared winner by the ICT manager on Saturday 21st March beating his counterpart Mohammed Sharif Abdiwahab, a Somali national from Faculty of Islamic Studies.
Mr. Muzamiru garnered 586 votes from male students, 552 from female totaling to 1138 while Mohammed Sharif 984 male and 240 female votes, a percentage of 54.9% to 45.1% respectively.
The elections has been described first of the kind to hit the 2,000 mark of the electorate though it polarized the campus creating “an international v Ugandan” student affair. Nandala wasn’t accessible to comment and state his priorities since he is currently off campus. His opponent allied with a one Aisu who didn’t make it from the Shura, in consideration for a cabinet post but that wasn’t enough to clinch him. Suleiman Kawuzi, a campaign manager of the victor described the victory as symbol of patriotism among the Ugandan students.
Announcement of the results at around 5:00pm provoked an unprecedented “kadodi” dance session among the jubilant since the new guild is Gishu which almost turned out a complete assault to all the Sharia rules. But for the police and several security personnel, the celebration was almost taking both Hajjis and Hajats off campus.
