Kansai Plascon Uganda, the leading paint company in the country has donated paint worth UGX 40 million to Busoga College Mwiri in Jinja District, Eastern Uganda. The donation was made by a team led by the Managing Director, Mr. Santosh Gumte and received by the school Board of Governors and Staff.
The contribution was made on Friday 3rd February, 2023 in light of a call by the school to refurbish the school that has existed for over 100 years. The school is seeking up to UGX 5 billion to help refurbish structures and put them back on standard.
According to the school authorities, Mwiri which sits on 67 acres of land; comprising ancient sporting facilities, laboratories, and classrooms, requires a facelift to match modern standards and provide a favorable learning environment for the students.
The head teacher, Mr. Arthur Mbalule told Campus Bee that they have partnered with Kansai Plascon, which has since offered them paint worth UGX 40 Million to give dormitories, classrooms, and the administration block a fresh coat of paint.
While delivering the much-needed support, Mr. Gumte said that their partnership involves skilling students in painting and interior design as part of their advancement in vocational skills. He said that the paint would be used in rehabilitating the worn-down structures at a Jinja-based school.
“By joining Mwiri to start teaching students painting skills, I know we are going to transform these boys into responsible men, able to contribute to our society and country,” the Plascon boss said.
The MD also used the opportunity to thank government and the Ministry of Education for transforming the students’ curriculum to include practical lessons in vocational activities, saying it will fill the gap in the labour market that has been desperately craved.
“I understand that the school curriculum has been modified by the Ministry of Education to include more practical or vocational skills training for students. This is a very welcome progression and one that the labour market desperately needs. These skills will ensure students leave school with a good education but also the capacity to start income generating activities.” Mr. Gumte said.
Mwiri has for long been a cradle of excellence in Eastern Uganda and the country at large boosting of accomplished alumni like former President Dr. Apollo Milton Obote, former Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, Makerere Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe and other distinguished professionals.
