The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) officially launched the newly constructed UGX 6.9 Billion infrastructure at Makerere University.
The commissioning took place on Wednesday October, 31st where KCCA spearheaded by Jennifer Musisi Ssemakula handed over the University’s main gate, 9 roads reconstructed with inbuilt drainage, street lights and paved walkways, perimeter wall, 3 storied modern administrative and classroom block at Makerere College School, the renovated Makerere Hospital, parking bays and a tennis court within the University.
The infrastructure was built after KCCA and Makerere University signed a memorandum of understanding as a compensation for the land taken by KCCA for the expansion of Makerere Hill Road.
The function was graced by the Makerere top administration, students’ guild as well as invited members of the press.
During the commissioning of the main gate, Jennifer Musisi noted that she met a lot of resistance and threats of being sued by people who claimed that it is a historical gate.
“There are people who were threatening to sue me over that gate, claiming it’s a historical gate, they have been threatening to sue us on every other project we have done in the city. When you are building Wandegeya Market they take you to court, when you are doing the taxi park they take you to court but I am used to being taken to court because the project will go on as we sort out court matters,” Musisi revealed.
The Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has taken it to social media to show his gratitude following the commissioning of the newly constructed infrastructure as he noted that Makerere will never be the same.
“The grand opening of Mak’s new Main Gate marked a climax of the largest infrastructure works in the history of Mak executed under the MOU between Mak and KCCA as compensation for land uptake for the expansion of Makerere Hill Road,” Nawangwe wrote.
