Ugandan groomed journalists or mass communication students this time round won’t have to worry about the surging unemployment syndrome affecting every Ugandan elite youth.
Speaking to the mass communication students at this year’s season 3 Inter-Institution Media Challenge Awards, Moses Watasa the Information commissioner Office of the Prime Minister assured students of how plans are underway at the Ministry of Information and National Guidance to recruit more information specialists; not only in the government sector but also in the private sector. So keep calm journalism students.
However he cautioned and advised students to kick start their careers as freelance journalists. Maybe they’ll be retained thereafter as permanents for their commendable works. This will also enable them acquire the desired experience to comfortably compete for jobs in sectors like government. Since such sectors want to only recruit people with contacts and experience in media houses.
A total of eight universities where represented at the challenge; Makerere University [MUK], Uganda Christian University [UCU], Islamic University In Uganda [IUIU], Multitech Business College [UMCAT], Ndejje University, Kampala University, Muteesa1 Royal University and Cavendish University.
Students were required to submit a news bulleting representing core elements of reporting, camera work, editing and news anchoring to a panel of judges. Other journalism categories like photography and print where inclusive of the challenge.
