Makerere University’s Law Society went to the polls on Friday 16th March to elect new leaders in a hotly contested poll that saw Kenneth Kiapi, a second year law student emerge winner with 346 votes against his opponent’s 332. Just a margin of 14 votes was able to determine Kiapi as winner over a one Conrad Wasike, also a second year student.
In the build up to the election, Kiapi mesmerised students when he unveiled a prototype of an application that would ease their access to learning material, improve student interactions as well as their socio-welfare during their stay at the university.
The app, that he named Amicus, can conclusively be regarded as the reason he was able to edge his opponent.
The law society at Makerere is known for, among other things, grooming upright students as regards intellectualism and learning at the university but also, the annual law dinner.
This A-Class event that also doubles as the farewell party for fourth year law students is the epitome of social life at Makerere and every student is always looking up to it. Right now, its success lies in this gentleman’s hands.
When contacted, Kiapi told our reporter that he was well upto the task ahead and only asked that we let time judge him.
“It means alot to me. The students have literally signed an agreement with me, delivered on their part and it is now my time to fulfil my end of the agreement”, he said.
The resident of Nkrumah Hall in the heart of Makerere University could not contain his joy when a passerby student addressed him as Mr. President amidst the engagement with our reporter.
Other winners of the day were Linda Esther Mugisha who was elected Vice President, Joan Agasha the Speaker and Howard Mwesigwa, the first year representative.
Kiapi replaces Kansiime Mukama Taremwa, who is now a third year student.
