The Desire Mirembe case is still on with the key suspect incognito to the public eye. Court assessors at the Mukono High Court have in the latest hearing advised the jury to pin Mathew Kirabo guilty for murdering his former girlfriend – Desire Miremebe in 2015
About 3 months ago, during a session at Mukono High Court, experts presented a DNA report pinning Mathew Kirabo, a former Makerere University student in the murder of his then-girlfriend, Desire Mirembe.
According to the lead assessor, Robert Sseguya, court should do all in its capacity to find Mr. Kirabo guilty for the heinous crime since all evidence points towards him.
“There is conclusive evidence to show that Kirabo killed Desire Mirembe, this is why he ran into hiding,” Sseguya argued.
The assessors went ahead to present before court a video showing Kirabo consenting to the murder in a statement he gave to police before being granted bail in 2016.
Judge Henry Kaweesa set May 30, 2022 as the date on which he will give his final verdict.
It should be recalled that Kirabo has been missing for a while since last year, following pressure from activists who want him behind bars. His family (sureties) at a point had to pay UGX 150 million to avoid being arrested since their son was nowhere to be seen.
The case has attracted a number of activists who are determined to attain justice following several hearings that have yielded little. Since the court hearings begun in 2016, Kirabo has only attended two sessions before he disappeared into ‘thin air’.
It is alleged that Kirabo, who doubles as a medical doctor at Mulago Hospital killed Mirembe while he was still a student of Makerere University in 2015 after the couple reportedly conflicted in their love affair.
Kirabo confessed to the gruesome act and was charged in the Jinja Magistrates Court with murder before being remanded. He was later granted bail on November 24, 2016 so that he can finalize his studies. Kirabo concluded his studies before securing a juicy job at Mulago Hospital.
