Omara Tonny, a fifth-year Bachelor of Pharmacy student from Kampala International University (KIU), has returned from a distinguished academic exchange program in Indonesia, bringing international recognition to his university and home country. Sponsored by the University of Indonesia’s Faculty of Pharmacy under the UI CREATE initiative, this program underscores KIU’s commitment to developing highly skilled and globally competent professionals.
The University of Indonesia, renowned as one of Asia’s premier academic institutions, hosted a six-week training on Phytomedicine in Indonesian Traditional Medicines from July 1st to August 24th, 2024. The program attracted participants from around the world, and Omara’s exceptional performance secured him a spot as one of the top two students invited on an exclusive, fully funded study tour across Indonesia from October 19th to 28th, 2024.
“Being chosen as one of the top participants was an incredible honor and a testament to the preparation I received from KIU,” Omara said, emphasizing the university’s role in equipping him for such achievements.
During his time in Indonesia, Omara engaged with state-of-the-art laboratories, participated in insightful academic sessions, and took part in cultural exchanges that expanded his understanding of traditional medicine. He also joined industrial tours and interacted with leading faculty members, gaining practical experience in bioactive compound extraction and pharmacognosy. “The practical sessions were invaluable,” Omara noted, highlighting the opportunity to compare African and Indonesian medicinal practices.
Omara credited his success to KIU’s rigorous training, which combines modern infrastructure, a robust curriculum, and a commitment to fostering a global perspective. The university’s comprehensive pharmacy program emphasizes both theoretical and practical knowledge, ensuring that students can handle complex healthcare challenges. KIU’s leadership has consistently prioritized creating an environment where students like Omara can thrive and excel, both locally and internationally.
Reflecting on KIU’s approach to healthcare education, Omara acknowledged the institution’s dedication to innovation and excellence. “KIU has fostered an environment where innovation thrives,” he said, underscoring the support and vision that have propelled him and many other students toward success.
Beyond the academic sphere, Omara also contributed insights into African traditional medicine during discussions with peers and experts, fostering connections that could lead to future research collaborations. His experience has paved the way for potential partnerships between KIU and Indonesian institutions, strengthening the university’s status as a hub for international education.
“I look forward to sharing what I’ve learned with my peers, faculty, and everyone at KIU,” Omara stated. He believes that the skills and insights gained during this program will have a long-lasting impact on his professional growth and the university’s academic community.
