Fifteen Kyambogo University students were remanded to Luzira Prison on Monday after staging an unauthorized protest against the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) near Parliament.
Grade One Magistrate Sanula Nabozo at Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court charged the students, who appeared shirtless in court, with being a common nuisance.
The accused, including Simon Peter Wafula, Gary Wettaka, and Shadiah Nabukenya among others, denied the charges.
According to court documents, the students were arrested at approximately 1:30 PM on Parliamentary Avenue while wearing orange T-shirts with anti-EACOP messages and carrying placards demanding an end to TotalEnergies’ pipeline project.
Parliament security supervisor Gonzaga Semanda reported the group was calling for a transition to renewable energy.
The students requested a brief adjournment to contact sureties, explaining that police had confiscated their phones and belongings during arrest.
However, they were remanded until November 26 for case mention, with Magistrate Nabozo noting that a production warrant could be issued sooner upon proof of student status.
State Prosecutor Allan Mucunguzi informed the court that investigations into the protest, which allegedly caused public obstruction and inconvenience, are ongoing.
