The Kyambogo administration led by the University Secretary, Mr Charles Okello embarked on a move to ban fellowships around campus most especially those illegally held at the Peace Park that’s located right above the faculty of Engineering.
In a statement released by Mr Okello, the University has official gazetted religious places that include a Catholic Church, an Anglican Church, a mosque and a place where Seventh Day Adventist students can gather and pray.
Pentecostals who include students belonging to Phaneroo, Zoe and other ministries have been on countless occasions gathering to fellowship in different corners of the university without the administration’s consent. This they’ve always done at different intervals and timings causing noise pollution to near-by lecture rooms and disrupting academic activities.
“Some fellowships go on past 11pm in the night without security,” said the University Secretary.
On realizing how insecure and inappropriate these students were gathering and treating the University, Mr Okello wrote to them last semester seeking for an explanation and a formalization process of their activities. Up to date, we are told, no response has ever graced his office desk and the practice seems to gain momentum as freshers have flocked those different fellow-shipping cliques making it a frenzy. History continues to repeat itself as fellowships go on past 11pm and in dark corners.
Yesterday, an internal security meeting was held between the University Police OC Mr Bahulire , Guild information minister Henry Kitakule, the Dean Ms Mildred Tibananuka and the University Secretary.
A way forward had been reached to start arresting these students but the Dean Ms Tibananuka intervened saying that’d be so rude of the administration. An agreement was thereby reached to send the last notice to these different groups to conform by the university rules and regulations and if they don’t, an arrest warrant will be issued to take control of the situation.
Do you think the administration is right to intervene in students’ freedom of worship?
