Kyambogo University Guild Council approved a new electoral commision on Tuesday Evening that will spearhead the electoral process that will see the institution getting a new Guild President, Guild Representative Councillors (GRCs) and Hall chairpersons.
Among others, the new chairperson of the electoral commision is Akatuyamba Baker who was overwhelmingly supported by the house. Baker was defeated by the current Guild President Amanya German in the FDC primary elections last year that saw the latter proceed to win the Guild Presidential race.
Additionally, it was decided that the chairperson of the electoral commision will work for Shs. 1,500,000, the Vice Chairperson will get Shs. 1,200,000, the Secretary will get Shs. 1,000,000, the commissioners Shs. 500,000 each and polling agents Shs. 135,000 each.
The house also debated the amount of nomination fees that will be required of interested candidates to pay in order to contest for various positions. After a long debate, it was decided that the Guild Presidential candidates would pay Shs. 500,000, prospective Guild Representative Councillors will pay Shs. 30,000, Hall chairperson aspirants will part with Shs. 80,000 whereas those interested in becoming hall secretaries will have to pull out Shs. 30,000.
Kyambogo University will vote in a new Guild Council in March, 2019. The Guild Presidential race itself being tight, students at the Banda based institution are eager to witness how the political atmosphere will take a twist.
