For the last three years, the National Unity platform (NUP) has been dominating university politics with its flag bearers becoming Guild Presidents in their respective universities.
It has been literary known that Kyambogo and Makerere Universities were NUP’s base camps where majority of the guild leaders were affiliated to the Kamwokya based political party.
However, this was challenged yesterday when Serge Tumwine the Forum for Democratic Party (FDC) flag bearer was declared as the next Guild President for Kyambogo University.
Serge scooped 5116 votes against his two close competitors Mandwa Elijah (NUP) and Ssekanjako Bazungu Masuudi (People Power) who gathered 35500 and 1380 respectively.
According to sources at Kyambogo University, Serge’s victory was attributed to confusion that was shown in the NUP camp which presented two candidates affiliated to NUP in the last days of the campaign.
A source who preferred confidentiality revealed to Campus Bee as follows;
The division in the party is quite obvious, we had candidates from both People Power and NUP in this year’s guild elections. Mbaziira’s NUP government didn’t serve students as he promised during his campaigns. His cabinet always disagreed with him and students lost hope in NUP on allegations of misuse of guild funds.
NUP had primaries a day before the guild nominations something that should have been done long ago. The only support Mandwa had was that from the school of management where he was the first guild presidential aspirant from the school of management. Both Masudi and Serge were coming from the school of engineering. Mbaziira the current guild president on the NUP ticket, surprisingly supported Masudi who lost to Mandwa in the NUP primaries. This backs the reasons as to why students opted for Serge as their Guild President.
