Several Kyambogo University students were on Wednesday barred from accessing university premises over students’ identity cards. The students, who are registered voters were stopped from exercising their right to choose the next guild president because they didn’t carry their IDs on polling day.
According to a Police officer who didn’t identify himself, he was ordered to block everyone without an ID from accessing the university.
“Show me your student ID” The officer, who mistook our reporter for a student said before adding “If you are a journalist show me your press card now!”
Some students were heard complaining that they had left their IDs at home, while others had photocopies which were denied. Some students were later seen going back home while others remained stranded at the gate wondering how they will vote.
The elections were generally peaceful following the heavy deployment by Uganda Police. All polling stations had more than two police officers guarding the ballot boxes like their life depended on it. The polls were slightly interrupted by drizzles before everything went back to normal.
