Kyambogo University’s Electoral Commission has officially confirmed it will conduct by-elections to replace the dismissed Guild President and suspended Guild Council members, promising a process that is “free, fair, and transparent.”
In a strongly worded notice dated August 19, 2025, Commission Chairperson Osman Mohamed Ahmed said the body was ready to implement Article 9 of the Guild Constitution, which requires by-elections within 28 days of vacancies.
The announcement follows a letter from Guild Speaker Rt. Hon. Atuhaire Sharon, who formally notified the Commission of the vacant seats after weeks of leadership chaos.
“The Commission is committed to upholding the principles of democracy, fairness and transparency. We assure the electorate that we will provide a level playing field for all contestants,” Ahmed declared.
Preparations are already underway, with the Commission drafting a budget and work plan to present to the Guild Representative Council (GRC) for approval. A full list of vacant seats has also been attached to guide the process.
The call has now gone out for interested candidates to prepare their bids, as the university braces for a hotly contested race.
Students are being urged to take part actively in the by-elections, which come at a critical time for Kyambogo’s student leadership after the dramatic dismissal of the Guild President earlier this month.
With the Speaker and Electoral Commission both moving swiftly, campus observers say the by-elections will be a make-or-break test for student democracy — and a chance for Kyambogo to restore order in its fractured guild government.
