During the Kyambogo University Students General assembly that was held on Wednesday afternoon, scholars from the Banda-based university resolved to reject online lectures, tuition increment, surcharge, among other policies that they believe are unfair.
Chaired by their speaker Serge Tumwiine, the assembly was also graced by the newly sworn in Guild President Mbaziira John who vowed to stand with students to fight Open Distance E-Learning (ODEL).
“Let it be on record that I consent with members who submitted that the university is not ready for ODEL. It is a system which they can not implement when they are teaching because when you say lets look at how we are going to better it, when lecturers are supposed to be teaching but not teaching then who is losing out,” Mbaziira wondered.

Mbazira also revealed that the university has about 600 computers yet it has over 40,000 students. According to him, this is a clear indicator that Kyambogo’s technological infrastructure is still lacking.
During the assembly, one member disclosed that there are several lecturers who don’t know how to use computers but they were told to teach using computers, the student suggested that lecturers should be taught on how to operate these gadgets first before moving to implement e-learning.

Another disturbing issue at Kyambogo University is the tuition increment. A number of students are complaining about the institution’s abrupt move to increase tuition yet parents are still struggling with financial hardships that came as a result of the COVID-19. Mbaziira joined fellow students to reject the increment as well as the surcharge, explaining that him and other students from humble backgrounds cannot manage to pay that money.
“I also want to emphasize that you pay tuition until you finish your course according to the fees structure which they gave you when you were being admitted. So anything out of what is on your fees structure, then that is an irregularity.” Mbaziira said.
Only 200 students were allowed to attend the event in a bid to slow the spread of COVID-19. There was Police deployment around the Students Center where the event was held.
