After institutions of learning were closed again on June 7, finalists from 2020; who were expected to graduate at Kyambogo University were left hanging in balance regarding the ceremony dates.
A day ago, the Vice Chancellor of the University – Prof. Eli Katunguka made pronouncements on the administration’s plan to see the 17th graduation come to life.
In an interview with a Ugandan Newspaper – Daily Monitor; Prof. Katunguka explained that the University had planned to hold the graduation ceremony in August. But since institutions were closed, he says, the graduation now hangs in uncertainty.
“Most students had completed their school practice and internship and their lecturers had started filling their results into the university system ahead of the planned graduation in August,” Prof Katunguka said, explaining the activities that were taking place before the lockdown.
At the end of May, the university released a memo to the prospective graduands indicating the payment procedure and verification process that would lead to successful inclusion on the graduation list. The same memo had indicated the verification deadline as July 15.
The VC, Prof. Katunguka revealed that the Institution’s Senate is yet to resolve on the new date for the graduation that will see more than 8,000 passed through.
A number of students have decried the graduation delay saying it has cost them employment opportunities because they do not hold any transcripts that can push them to the field.
Normally, students who complete their final year usually wait for a maximum of 6 months before they graduate and step out into the world to earn a living, but this has not been the case for Kyambogo University since the COVID-19 pandemic struck.
Kyambogo’s sister universities such as Makerere, Mbarara University (MUST) have made efforts that have seen their graduations become a reality through virtual ceremonies heeding to the new normal.
