In retrospect, an orchestrated policy that required students to clear tuition and all functional fees within the first 12 weeks or be forcefully given a dead year caused unrest and violent protests at Kyambogo University last semester that even saw one of the students loose a hand in the process. Similarly, unverified information has been circulating that students will be required to clear Shs. 200,000 of the total tuition fees within the first month of the semester to be allowed to continue with their studies.
However, Kabodha Saidi, the Guild Information Minister came out during a Guild session to dismiss this information and guide students on tuition payments thus quelling all fears.
“The purported policy which states that we’re required to pay Shs 200,000 before the first month of the semester elapses is merely propaganda and not true. I was in the Finance office of recent and there is no new policy as such. Students should make tuition payments without pressure,” Kabodha said
The Guild Vice President Ninsima Hellen who also sits on the University Council added her voice and emphasized that the policy that requires payment of Shs 200,000 within the first month of the semester is nonexistent. She indicated that for any policy to be considered functional, it has to be discussed and passed by the University council.
Kabodha also took time to re-echo to students the new URA system of making tuition payments. He encouraged students to learn the new system.
“All you have to do is enroll on the AIMS system and know your bill, generate a reference number and present it together with the cash to a teller in any commercial bank in Uganda that accepts URA payments. The teller will generate a pay slip which indicates evidence of payment,” Kabodha informed the students.
