Kyambogo University Guild President German Amanya has had tough times in the past week over involvement in a bribery scandal concerning the newly appointed electoral commission.
It should be remembered that the electoral commission was appointed by German Amanya and presented to the house for vetting and approval on the 30th of January. However, even before commencement of duties, whistleblowers came up to pin the electoral commission in the office of the dean of students for promoting corruption. The dean of students assigned the Senior Legal Officer to open up an investigation into the matter only to realize that it was not only the commissioners but also the Guild President involved in receiving bribery money.
In a letter addressed to the entire students’ fraternity from the office of the dean of students dated 14th February 2019, it read in a part;
“The chairperson of the electoral commission and some other members of the electoral commission had solicited for and received bribes from fellow students in order for them to be recruited as polling Assistants. The Committee under the senior legal officer further established that part of the money collected was passed on to the Guild President.”
The committee recommended that the Guild President be held accountable for involving himself in bribery which action contravenes the constitution and students’ regulation.
Word from the students’ fraternity also has it that the Guild President was paid by the commissioners, amounts totaling to over Shs. 300,000 in order for them to be given the top positions on the electoral commission though this has not yet been confirmed. Others believe that it is not only the Guild President but also the Speaker and some Ministers involved in this scandal even though they have not been brought into the limelight.
This involvement in a bribery scandal has left many students questioning the credibility of the Guild president with many pushing for his resignation even before the end of his tenure in office. It should be noted that German Amanya ha registered humongous criticism with many branding his regime a failed one.
