Kyambogo University has been fazed by several days of unrest as students sought for solutions to their grievances.
On May 8, the university top management sat with student leaders, led by the Guild President H.E Wafula Edrine to forge a way forward.
At the meeting, the Vice Chancellor noted that the council received and considered four issues from the Guild President which led to an industrial action that has lasted for approximately one week.
The issues raised included; delayed payment of food and living out allowances for Government sponsored Students, surcharge for late registration, delayed uploading of examination results and delayed payment of salaries for Part-time Lecturers and Technicians .
In order to come to an amicable settlement and bring an end to the industrial action, it was resolved that;
- Food and living-out allowances shall be processed and paid by 19th May 2023.
- Payment of the surcharge is halted, pending Management’s recommendation to the University Council to have it waived for this semester.
- Management holds a meeting with the Deans and Directors of Faculties and Schools to ensure that examination results are released and uploaded on the Student’s portals in time.
- Management holds a meeting with the Deans and Directors of Faculties and Schools to address the issue of unpaid salaries for Part-time Lecturers and Technicians.
In addition, it was agreed that management holds regular meetings with Student leaders as a way of addressing the issues affecting the Student body.
As an interim measure, Government sponsored Students experiencing challenges of non-payment of accommodation fees and meals should individually contact the Office of the Dean of Students for management of their issues.
Only time will tell how for long this truce will last.
