A Testimony of Determination and Disability Inclusion

Today, December 10, 2024, during Kyambogo University’s 20th Graduation Ceremony, Steven Opakrwot stood tall among his peers as a beacon of resilience and determination. Graduating with First-Class Honors in a Bachelor of Community Development and Social Justice, Steven’s journey to this achievement is nothing short of extraordinary.

Steven’s academic aspirations initially leaned toward pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine at a public university in Uganda. However, a vision problem that led to surgery resulted in total blindness, altering his life’s trajectory. For three long years, Steven stayed home without studies or adequate rehabilitation services.

In 2021, his journey took a transformative turn when he was referred to Kyambogo University. There, he enrolled in the Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation, where he benefited from the Visual Assistive Technology Unit under the “All We See is Possibility” (AWSiP) program. This initiative, dedicated to empowering students with disabilities, provided Steven with foundational skills, adaptive technologies, and the confidence to pursue higher education.

With the unwavering support of the university’s Disability Support Services Centre, Steven thrived academically and socially. His vibrant personality and intellectual curiosity won him a broad network of friends and followers, both in person and online. Through thoughtful reflections on societal issues shared on social media, Steven turned his lived experience into a source of inspiration for others.

“Steven has been a model of what determination and support can achieve. His humor, intellect, and ability to connect with others have enriched our community,” shared a representative from the Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation.

Today, Steven’s First-Class degree in Community Development and Social Justice signifies not just academic excellence but the possibilities that emerge when society prioritizes inclusion and support for persons with disabilities.
