Students of Kyambogo University were on Wednesday tipped with knowledge expected to help in their career at the university’s West End Main Hall, during the NSSF-Monitor Career Expo.
The event was part of the National Social Security Fund’s (NSSF) initiative in partnership with Daily Monitor to move across eleven Ugandan universities preparing students for the work place.
The first session was kicked off by Samuel Ssettumba, a business editor at NTV Uganda who talked about leadership and how students can build their value at the
The second speaker was NSSF’s Chief Financial Officer, Stevens Mwanje who lectured Kyambogo students about the Financial Literacy Programme, in a bid to empower them with financial and investment knowledge that will help them make better financial decisions.
“It doesn’t matter whether you are working. One thing you must know is that you must be financially aware. That is why you have to learn how to deal with your money and how to move yourself forward . It starts with a mindset that I’m going to do good things.” Mwanje told the Banda-based leaners.
He went further to advise students to save the little money given to them by parents as he described saving as a discipline while spending as indiscipline.
“Your father gives you pocket money and a lot of money. Why don’t you start saving part of the money your dad is giving you now? Saving is a discipline and consuming is indiscipline.” Mwanje said.
Speaking of people’s savings, Mwanje admitted that majority of them who save with NSSF spend their savings in just two years. “The 80% of people that claim their benefits spend the money in just two years and only 5% of those people can attend financial sustainability programs that help them to look after themselves” says Mwanje.
Mwanje’s presentation was followed by NSSF’s Deputy Managing Director, Patrick Ayota who talked about what to do when a job seeker is invited for an interview, among other keys issues. Ayota advised the students with five things they can do when invited for an interview, which include:-
1. Find out the expected dress code, avoid the bling.
2. Research about the company
3. Arrive before time
4. Speak confidently
5. Be thankful
The event also featured question sessions where lucky Kyambogo students walked away with lots of gifts like T-Shirts, bottles of water, as well as chances for internship at NSSF. Students who attended the Expo fully were awarded with certificates of participation.
This year’s being its 8th edition, the expo will take place in 11 universities around the country which include; Makerere University, Makerere University Business School, Nkumba University, Ndejje University, Kampala International University, Kyambogo University and Muteesa I University.
