Kyambogo Students Stage Deadly Protest Against 12 Weeks Policy

Kyambogo University students rose up against the unfair and utilitarian 12 Weeks policy that was signed and passed by the University council recently by staging a deadly protest. The students marched to the Senate building with sticks and stones in a bid to smoke the top administration officials out and hear from the on this unfair policy.

The 12 Weeks policy is a directive that stipulates that any student who will not have paid full tuition and functional fees 12 Weeks into the semester will be automatically discontinued and attain a Dead Semester. The students evolving from poor or marginalised homes are against this policy because their parents usually complete tuition payment towards examination week.

“This policy is against the principle of equality. Most Kyambogo University students evolve from struggling families and this is a way of eliminating the poor and favoring the rich. We shall not accept it,” one of the students protested.

At exactly 8:00 AM, all faculties marched in an organised mode towards Senate and formed a resistance the police would hardly halt. Those who attempted to hide in classrooms and halls of residence were also smoked out coercively. The students stoned and dismantled University property in anguish. However, they failed to access the top University officials at the Senate because they refused to come out.

Towards 10:00 AM, the police unleashed tear gas on the students and scattered them in various directions.

By the time our reporter filed this story, the UPDF soldiers were at the Halls of residence arresting students who had gone to seek refuge. We shall continue to update you.
