Kyambogo University administration has suspended seventeen students for their alleged involvement in a strike last week.
According to an official notice, the suspensions will take effect immediately and last for one month, pending formal hearings before the Students’ Affairs and Welfare Committee.
The university management cited Regulation 40 of the Kyambogo University Students’ Regulations as the basis for the disciplinary action following incidents that occurred on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.
The suspended students have been instructed not to appear on university premises during their suspension period.
The list of suspended students includes representatives from various faculties and academic programs across the university, with the Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, and School of Education having the highest number of affected students.
The Uganda National Students’ Association (UNSA) has responded strongly to the suspensions.
UNSA General Secretary John Kasule condemned the university’s decision, stating: “As UNSA, we strongly condemn the suspension of student leaders for protesting surcharge fees. Silencing voices undermines academic freedom and growth not just for institutions, but for Uganda’s future. Dialogue, not repression, is the way forward.”
Sources familiar with the situation indicate that the demonstration was related to recently implemented surcharge fees that have been a point of contention between the student body and university administration.
Several student representatives among those suspended were reportedly involved in organizing protests against these additional costs.
The suspensions come at a critical time with end-of-semester examinations approaching for many students.
