Kyambogo University Students’ Affairs and Welfare Committee has issued fresh summons against students that allegedly participated in the deadly violent protest that was staged at the University in March this year against the 12 Weeks Policy.
The 12 Weeks Policy is a Kyambogo University Council initiation that requires students to clear tuition and functional fees to zero balance within the first 12 Weeks of the semester, short of which they are forcefully discontinued. When students came to learn of this policy in March this year, it caused mayhem and a violent protest at the University which culminated into running battles with the UPDF.
Among those issued fresh summons is Tumusiime Abraham, the Engineering student whose hand was shattered by a Teargas canister during the protests. Others include Nyesiga Seezi, Huruma Oscar, Otuki Moses and Ssenyange Umar. It should be remembered that these students were, immediately after the protests, detained at Jinja road police station for close to 6 days (with the exception of Tumusiime Abraham) and were only released on tough bond conditions.
Apparently, the University committee of Welfare and Students Affairs claims that it has garnered new audio and video evidence to pin the suspected protesters. Mr. Mugomba Francis, the Deputy Dean of students has sent notices to the suspected students to appear for hearing on 4th September 2019 in the University Council room.
However, Baguma Owen, one of the summoned students who is a renowned news reporter at the University denied the claims of new evidence.
“There is no evidence the committee can use against me on the basis of videos or audios circulated during that time. I did not send any video or audio content,” said Baguma.
