Kyambogo University won their inaugural University Football Leauge Trophy on Saturday 10th November at Namboole Stadium after beating an equally competent Kampala University side 2-2 (3-2) on Penalties.
The football match that started at 3:00 PM was dominated by evenly matched teams basing on the quality football that was exhibited by both sides. In the 21st minute of the game, Kyambogo University succumbed to an own goal that was netted by William Okello sending the Kampala University side into an early jubilation.
The game was played to Half Time (45th minute) and Kampala University somehow believed that this was their year. However, an equalizing goal from Kyambogo’s Emmanuel Mwesigwa in the 69th minute diminished their heightened hopes putting the game at 1-1.
With a game undecided at Full Time (90 minutes), 30 more minutes of Extra time we’re played. In the 96th minute, Kyambogo’s Emmanuel Mwesigwa proved unstoppable as he forwarded a powerful shot that rattled the cross bar before going into the net. This sent the Kyambogo University fans into jubilations as their hopes of winning the title were now prevalent.
However, a diving header from Kampala University’s Ivan Mayanja in the 108th minute could prove that it wasn’t over yet for the opponents of the Banda based institution.
With the game at 2-2 After Extra Time, a penalty shootout ensued. An aura of disappointment could be witnessed as both teams missed the first spot kicks of the shootout.
After a series of Penalties, Sekidde Robert of Kyambogo University converted the last spot kick to guarantee Kyambogo University the 2018 University Football League crown. The Spot kicks were tantamounted into a (3-2) score in favor of Kyambogo University.
Fans from Kyambogo University flocked the pitch in wild jubilation, taking selfies of this first memorable win and ruining property of Pepsi Company which promulgated into running battles with the Police and UPDF.
This University football league final match proved to be the most interesting as it was the first to ever go into a penalty shootout in the history of the University football League finals.
