News reaching our desk from the Banda based Kyambogo University indicates that the Guild Representative Council (GRC) members have petitioned the administration over pending surcharges that have suddenly surfaced on the student portals.
According to our reporter, the confusion started when students received emails informing them of the surcharges that they are supposed to pay for the end of semester two for the academic year 2020/2021.
This prompted the NUP leaning GRCs led by Wafula Edrine, Nahabwe Bruce and 10 others to immediately petition the Deputy Vice Chancellors in charge of Finance and Administration calling for a waiver of the charges.
The complainants argue that the country is recovering from the consequences of Covid-19 pandemic which had sent most parents on their knees orchestrated by the worst financial situations. They also claim that they are struggling to convince their parents and guardians since this is coming at the time they had completed paying all the school dues.
It should be noted that most students at Kyambogo University have already finished their end of semester two exams and the appearance of these surcharges pause many questions at why the charges are appearing at such a time.
The surcharges had been suspended during the Covid-19 time after the then Guild President Mbaziira John petitioned the same office, bringing to their attention the hard economic situation for most parents.
Surcharges were imposed as a penalty for those who were paying their tuition late in what they called the Six Weeks Policy. Ug Shs 50,000 would be charged on anyone who completed their dues after six weeks.
