A section of the Guild Representative Council (GRCs) have through a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor on 13th September 2022 requested the latter to pardon students who were caught with forged examination cards and subsequently arrested.
In the same letter, the GRCs requested that students who are not able to complete tuition payments may be allowed to sit examinations, especially those with genuine financial reasons as to why they are not able to pay.
It is to be remembered that examinations started on Monday 5th September 2022 and some students from all faculties have partially completed their examinations.
There have been quite a number of challenges regarding these examinations as over one hundred students have been caught with forged examination permits and arrested with immediate effect.
Some students whose portals reflect the shs. 50,000 surcharge fee, even when they paid long before 10th July 2022, are cursing after being n chased out of examination rooms on allegations of incomplete tuition payment.
Students have only learned of the fact that the shs. 50,000 surcharge does not only affect those that pay late but also those who register late (after 10th July).
This explains why it’s not just the private students complaining but a great deal of government students as well.
Challenges like these have driven the councilors to write to the Vice Chancellor, pleading that him and the examination committee be lenient enough.
They base this request on the financial constraints brought about by the current economic situation in the country characterized by skyrocketing commodity prices.
For this reason, a number of students are not able to meet their tuition requirements to zero balance in order to sit for the end of semester examinations.
GRCs allege that students who resorted to desperate measures such as forging examination permits were forced to do so due to the mentioned financial constraint.
The 18th Guild house therefore recommends that students who have minimal tuition balances should be allowed to sit their examinations without restrictions, supplementary examinations be given to those who have missed out on examinations due to genuine financial reasons and that the examination committee should pardon the students that were arrested.
In addition to that, the university management is advised to establish a special office that handles tuition related issues to curb the vice of forgeries and students missing out on papers due to financial constraints.
