Yesterday Morning, Kyambogo University gates were left wide open with no security personnel to provide protection.
Reserve Protection Services (RPS) the company that employs these guards is said to be delaying payment to these security officers hence forcing them to protest and leave their posts.
They didn’t only stop at leaving their work posts but also went ahead to scoop out their colleagues who had insisted on working by forcing them to join the struggle to the salary land. These guards say they earn a meager salary of less than 200,000 and work under harsh conditions, they are served one meal a day and are expected to spend sleepless nights watching over the campus.
The management of the security company tried to intervene by meeting up the guards but instead worsened the situation by sacking the protest ring leaders. The sacked guards include Kamali Steven, Richard Kidega and Kenneth Tumwesigye.
“I had no idea the guards had not been remunerated for the past two months. If I had known, the situation wouldn’t have come this far to create a bad image of the University” said the KYU Chief Security Officer.
Fahad Bahat a student and former guild aspirant at KYU said that the University stands at a high insecurity risk if this lay down of tools goes on because the guards play a vital role in protecting the campus.
Currently, the University is under the protection of the Uganda police.
