The Guild President of Kyambogo University, H.E Serge Tumwine on 14th April wrote a letter to the University Bursar addressing the issue of late payment charges to students.
Two weeks ago, the University Bursar communicated through emails reminding students who had made tuition payment beyond 17th February to clear surcharges of late tuition payment based on the six weeks policy of the University. However, the GRCs petitioned the administration to quickly halt the surcharges but much to the students’ dismay, nothing has been done about it.
The guild president therefore wrote a letter to the university Bursar reminding him that the previous guild house led by John Mbaziira, the 17th Guild president had made amendments regarding the change of the six weeks policy to eight weeks instead. The deadline date thus should have been 2nd March instead of 17th February.
H.E Serge, in an attempt to reason with the Bursar reminded him that the holiday between the first semester and the second semester of the 2020/2021 academic year had been such a short one that it was less than a week and hence parents and guardians didn’t have ample time to get the large amounts of money needed for tuition.
“As we implement the policy of the university in promoting the will of its existence, we pray that management should not make it a sole punishment to students, this frustrates the students and parents as the stakeholders of the university yet we believe such policies should protect and promote the interest, sanity and good governance of this mighty university,” the letter reads.
The students still believe it is unfair that the University Bursar communicated about this matter when most of them had already finished their examinations and gone home for their holidays.
Hopefully, the leaders and the administration can reach an agreement favorable to all.
