It is Kyambogo University’s policy to charge late payment fees of shs. 50,000 to students after the sixth week into the semester. The first-year students are quite lucky for this surcharge will take effect after the 8th week as it has been amended by the University council.
In a letter addressed to the University Bursar on 1st July 2022, the Guild President H.E Serge Tumwine, requested the Bursar to extend the deadline after which continuing students will pay the late payment fees by the 8th week as well.
The reason for this very humble and kind request is an obvious one as everyone seems to be aware of the difficult economic situation in the country at the moment. Most of the common citizens have very low incomes in a country facing a very high rate of inflation in which commodity prices are skyrocketing with every blink of an eye.
To make matters worse for the parents, guardians and students who pay tuition for themselves, the semesters have been cut short, meaning that they have to find the money not less than one million shillings in the shortest time possible before examinations can begin.
The fact that today marks the beginning of the sixth week into the semester is causing stress and anxiety among students who don’t have the hope of paying the tuition soon and now they will have to look for an extra shs. 50,000.
The Guild President seems to be calling upon the Bursar to reason with him when in his letter he writes that, “with the current economic status which is well known and hitting our country, we hope for a positive consideration to be able to conciliate these challenges.”
Not all hope is lost when the students have such leaders who can stand up for them.
