Kyambogo University, on Thursday, 10th April, 2025, hosted the 4th edition of its much-anticipated STEAM Festival under the theme “Demystifying Science, Technology and Innovation for Community Development.” The two-day event started on a high gear by bringing together students, policymakers, and innovators to explore and exhibit cutting-edge solutions that bridge scientific theory with real-world impact.
The Guest of Honor, Hon. John Chrysestom Muyingo, Minister of State for Higher Education, was represented by Mrs. Frances Atima, principal inspector of schools at ministry of Education and Sports. In his read speech, he emphasized the central role of science and innovation in Uganda’s socio-economic transformation. He lauded the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into education, green mobility initiatives, and value addition in agri-technology as forward-thinking strides toward a more self-sustaining economy.
“This festival’s theme aligns seamlessly with the national development agenda,” Hon. Muyingo said. “The government remains committed to supporting scientific innovation and fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors.”
During his remarks, Prof. Jutus Kwetegyeka, Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration who represented the V.C, praised the top management and stakeholders for their continued support. He emphasized the importance of such platforms in translating academic theory into physical innovations and reiterated the university’s dedication to integrating AI into education for increased efficiency.
“Science and innovation are the driving engines of our country’s economic growth,” Prof. Kwetegyeka stated. However, he noted ongoing challenges such as limited research funding and understaffing that hinder the university’s full potential.
Dr. EdIriisa Mugampoza, Dean of the Faculty of Science, echoed similar concerns. He highlighted the difficulty of scaling student innovations due to inadequate funding for prototype development. Still, he proudly presented successful innovations across various faculties and extended heartfelt gratitude to supporters and stakeholders. An awards ceremony will crown the festival, celebrating the most outstanding innovation from the 15 student teams exhibiting their work.
The Chairperson of the University Council, Prof. Mangeni Wabwire, praised the transformation of Uganda’s education system and emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing research. On behalf of the 6th University Council, he pledged ongoing support for innovation-driven events like the STEAM Festival.
The event marks yet another milestone in Kyambogo University’s journey to becoming a hub for science, technology, and innovation. With growing enthusiasm and a shared vision for national development, the university continues to inspire a generation of thinkers, creators, and changemakers.
