Kyambogo University proudly welcomed participants, adjudicators, and esteemed guests to the Pan-African Universities Debate Championship (PAUDC) 2024, marking a significant milestone as Uganda hosts the prestigious tournament for the first time.
In his opening remarks, Mr. William Ngabirano, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, expressed gratitude to all attendees, emphasizing the unique opportunity the championship provides to foster dialogue, innovation, and collaboration across Africa.
“It is my utmost honor and pleasure to welcome you all to Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, and to Kyambogo University, the Center of Academic and Professional Excellence,” Mr. Ngabirano remarked. “We are not just here for a tournament; we are here to create lasting connections, exchange ideas, and explore the powerful potential of dialogue in driving change across Africa.”
The 2024 PAUDC is themed “Science, Technology, and Innovation as Tools for Peace-Building in African Countries,” a timely focus on addressing the continent’s challenges, including conflicts, climate change, and economic disparity. Mr. Ngabirano highlighted the critical role youth debates play in nurturing tolerance, cooperation, and sustainable development.
Kyambogo University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eli Katunguka Rwakishaya, was lauded for his leadership and unwavering support in making the event possible. His contributions, alongside the tireless efforts of the organizing team, were pivotal in delivering a tournament of this scale and significance.
The event has garnered widespread support from partners including Uganda National NGO Forum, Uwezo Uganda, Olympia Debate, Open Space Centre, Unicaf Uganda, Essella Country Hotel, and Uganda Airlines, among others. Their contributions were instrumental in ensuring a memorable championship for all participants.
Speaking on behalf of the organizing team, Mr. Ngabirano expressed immense pride in the collective efforts that brought the event to life. “This championship is about more than winning; it’s about engaging deeply with the issues that matter most to our continent and shaping a better future for all of us,” he stated.
Participants from across Africa, including representatives from South Africa, Rwanda, Namibia, and Ghana, were encouraged to approach the tournament not just as a competition but as a celebration of African ideas, talent, and innovation.
