In response to recent terror alerts across the country, Kyambogo University has implemented a series of stringent security measures to safeguard its large campus population. With its bustling daily activities and sizable infrastructure, the university is considered a potential target for terrorist attacks, prompting immediate action from the institution’s management.
The university’s administration, in collaboration with its security section, has rolled out a comprehensive set of guidelines aimed at mitigating any potential threats. These measures are designed not only to protect the students, staff, and visitors but also to maintain a secure environment conducive to learning.
Key Security Measures Implemented
- Restricted Access for Motorists:
Effective immediately, non-university motorists are barred from transiting through the campus. Only staff, students, and service providers with valid car stickers will be allowed entry, a move aimed at controlling traffic and reducing potential threats. - Prohibition of Boda Bodas:
Boda bodas, a popular mode of transport in Uganda, have been strictly prohibited from accessing university premises. This measure is intended to limit uncontrolled movement within the campus. - Enhanced Security Checks:
Security personnel will be conducting rigorous checks at all major campus entrances, including the Senate building, lecture rooms, halls of residence, and places of worship. Cooperation with security agencies is emphasized as a key element in ensuring campus safety. - Restricted Communal Prayers:
Communal prayers are now limited to recognized worship days under strict security protocols—Sundays for Anglicans, Born-Again Christians, and Catholics, Saturdays for Adventists, and Fridays for Muslims. This measure aims to monitor and control large gatherings that could be potential targets. - Regulated Social Gatherings:
All public and social gatherings on campus must receive prior permission and will be closely monitored by security personnel. This regulation is in place to prevent unauthorized assemblies that could pose security risks. - Controlled Parking and Regular Canine Sweeps:
Parking is restricted to designated areas only, and regular canine sweeps will be conducted in buildings and public spaces to detect any suspicious objects or activities. - Bag Restrictions for Students:
Students are prohibited from bringing large bags into lecture rooms and the library. Only small laptop bags or purses for female students are permitted, reducing the risk of hidden explosives or weapons being brought onto campus. - Increased Security Deployment:
Security forces, both covert and overt, have been strategically deployed across the campus, particularly in identified black spots. Students and staff are urged to report any suspicious activities or unattended objects immediately. - Community Sensitization and Hostel Checks:
Security teams will be conducting community sensitization sessions to educate students and staff on personal security and vigilance. Additionally, random security checks will be carried out in hostels located outside the university to ensure a comprehensive security approach. - Environmental Cleanliness:
Maintaining a clean and clear environment is also highlighted as a security measure. Regular slashing of tall grass, prompt emptying of garbage bins, and strict supervision of cleaning staff are among the steps being taken to prevent hiding places for potential threats. - Activated Student Security Committees:
The university has reactivated student security committees within halls of residence and faculties to enhance the collective vigilance and involvement of students in ensuring their safety. - Access Through Gazetted Gates Only:
Entry to the university will be strictly through designated gates, with the gate at the National Council for Higher Education temporarily closed to control access points effectively.
Kyambogo University’s management is urging all students, staff, and visitors to adhere to these guidelines diligently. The administration has stressed that these measures, while potentially inconvenient, are crucial for the safety and security of everyone on campus.
