As the semester ends for most Universities, Kyambogo University students from Karamoja are still stranded in their hostels as they contemplate whether to risk going back home after a stringent of scary news that has taken over media lately.
Accordingly to these students, government has not done enough to solve the cattle rustling problem in the North Eastern region that has put them and their parents lives at a very high risk.
“Students from Karamoja region are stranded in their hostels because there is no guarantee of safety at home,” Alupo Mercy Marion, Kyambogo University’s Guild Prime Minister told the media.
“These students are in dire need. They can’t afford meals because the parents who used to facilitate them are on the run,” she added.
The students who featured on NTV’s bulletin suggested having the government engage them in solving this crisis which they believe has been mishandled, offering to help in bringing back peace in the land if called upon.
The disarmament of the Karamojong launched by the UPDF instead resulted into a brutal war between the Karamojong who are not willing to give up their guns to UPDF. They claim that these guns are the only protection they have against the other rustling groups that attack them.
Cattle rustling among the Masai and Karimajong is a historical phenomenon that has been happening over the years.
