Kyambogo University students have appealed to their vice chancellor Prof. Elly Katunguka to refund the extra tuition they paid as a result of the tuition increment policy or carry it forward to the next semester.
“we request that the extra payments made, either be directly refunded to the students or carried forward. We are willing to work collaboratively to find a solution that benefits both the students and the University,” the students demanded.
The students made the demand in letter dated August 29th, 2024 addressed to the vice chancellor Prof. Katunguka.
The students say the decision to hike tuition was made without consultation or consideration of the students’ perspectives and that it is inconsiderate and detrimental.
“The dểcision, taken without consultation or consideration for the students’ perspectives, is not only inconsiderate but also detrimental to the very purpose of establishment of Kyambogo University and the education in its entirety,” the letter further reads.
Adding; ‘In addition, the commercialization of education contradicts the university’s mission to serve the public good. We strongly reiterate that, for, the greater good of the national development and to address the so many setbacks, Education should be a public investment aimed at enhancing economic returns for families, communities and the nation as a whole, not just for a privileged few.’
The students have suggested alternative ways the university can raise funds without hiking tuition to burden students and their sponsors. These are;
1. Increasing government funding and support for higher education.
2. Implementing a progressive student employment structure that takes into account of minimizing University expenditure and simultarieously supporting students from humble backgrounds.
3. Implement progressive resource mobilization strategies to generate income to university without subjecting the entire burden onto students.
4. Soliciting more donations and building partnerships that can draw more income to the University.
The students want their concerns to be addressed before the close the 30th of August 2024 to enable the so many stranded students register.
