Kyambogo University management has embraced tree planting as a measure to fight land grabbers and also protect the environment.
Kyambogo University administrators led by the vice chairperson University Council Sarah Lubega and the Professor Eli Katungunka planted trees around the university premises on Thursday April 28th, 2022.
According to a tweet by Kyambogo University, the exercise was intended to protect the environment and fight land grabbers.
“Today our council led by vice chair Sarah Lubega and @EliKatunguka, the vice chancellor together with top management planted trees as part of environment protection and securing our land against grabbers,” the tweet reads.
Kyambogo University has in the recent years faced land conflicts. Its alleged that part of the university land on which the staff quarters, department of art and design building, farm and the east end playground are do not belong to Kyambogo University.
last year, Hon. Betty Kamya, the Minister of Lands then, established a survey team to solve the land wrangles.
Jasper Kakooza, a senior staff surveyor at the lands ministry who was a member of the technical survey team said they found out that the land in question has two titles with the first one issued in 1962 and another one issued in 2007.
The university management now says the tree planting exercise is one of the new tactics to fight land grabbers.
