As the Government of Uganda is in the process of reviving the economy by lifting up some of the COVID-19 Lock down measures, Kyambogo University through its plumber Mr. Nyangkori Christopher responded to President Museveni’s call of assisting the government in the fight against coronavirus that has shaken the globe.
Mr. Nyangkori invented a touch free hand washing machine to help in handwashing during this COVID season. Having realized the problem that could break-out in busy places like markets and schools, he embarked on the idea developing this equipment to stop the spread of the virus.
“During this lockdown I visited Banda Market and found people washing hands while touching the tap handle and after washing, they would use the same washed hands to close the tap,’’ He revealed.
His equipment contains a water tank with 100 litres capacity and this can be used by 200 people before it is refilled. It operates when one steps on the foot pedal, the soap is released for use. It has a provision for solid soap as well, where a bar of soap is placed in the dispenser and it keeps releasing small particles of soap to use. The wasted water drains directly to the drainage system through a manhole. In places where there is no manhole, there can be a creation of a soak away pit to drain the wasted water.
“This equipment will be useful to schools and higher institutions when they resume operating. I have the ability to make 10 equipment per day provided that all the necessary materials are available, therefore I request all those interested to support me.” Nyangkori said.
Mr. Nyangkori heads the plumbing and sanitation section under the Department of Estates and Works at Kyambogo University.
