On the night of Monday 22nd August 2022, one of the Pearl security guards working at the East End gate (Banda gate) stopped a female student from entering campus over indecent dressing.
It was around 11:00pm when the female student dressed in a tight short dress and a pair of high heeled shoes reached the gate hoping to enter campus as she is a resident in one of the Halls of residence.
However, the security guard, whom she says was rather drank than sober stopped her from entering despite the fact that he had accepted all other students who were from watching the football match between Manchester United and Liverpool to enter the Campus.
The beautiful and gorgeous student was bothered by why the security guard stopped only her from entering.
“At this time, where are you coming from?” the guard authoritatively asked.
“How old are you? Imagine entering a man’s house and you are dressed like that!” he went on to say in a somewhat a fatherly tone.
Enraged by the guard’s audacity, the student reminded the guard of his duty and responsibilities as a security guard, which are to close and open the gate and ask students to show their identity cards to prove that they are actually students as contrary to the summon about decency versus indecency that he was beginning to utter.
“I thought your duty was to open and close the gate. If you had asked for my identity card, I would have understood. But you don’t have to ask me about my dress code,” the student retaliated.
This infuriated the guard who aggressively stopped her from entering the campus.
“You will not enter the campus as long as you are dressed like that,” he further threatened.
Stranded, the student called upon her friend who came to her rescue.
Had the friend not come and taken her to her hostel in Banda, this student believes beyond doubt that she would have slept outside the gate as the drank security guard was not going to let her in.
The question is, do security guards have the authority to stop students from accessing halls of residence or campus over such reasons?
