Nkurunziza Alphonse, a student at Kyambogo University and Chief Mobilizer of the National Unity Platform (NUP) chapter at the campus, has been brutally arrested by the Police for addressing the press about the late registration policy.
The new late registration policy dictates that students who register after the payment deadline, a surcharge fee of shs.50,000 is effected.
Some students have the surcharge even when they made their payments way earlier.
Worse still, other students have this shs. 50,000 reflecting on their portals even though they cleared all fees to zero balance before the date after which it was supposed to take effect.
Quite a number of students have been chased out of examination rooms and missed examinations over the treacherous policy.
The fact that this policy had never been communicated to students or affected them in any way in the past, has distressed students who have unfortunately missed examinations.
This explains why Nkurunziza Alphonse, Kamya Carlos and other eighteen comrades organized a press conference that was to be held today 19th September 2022.
“Education is in danger” was to be the theme of the press conference. All they hoped to talk about was the education injustices brought about by this late registration policy that came out of the blue.
These students also wanted to make their voices heard as they plead that supplementary examinations be given to those who missed out on examinations over the matter.
Little did they know that the Police and Army had already been notified to stop the press conference at whatever cost.
Journalists from NTV, BBS Terefayina and Bukedde had already gathered around Mandela Hall and Alphonse with his comrades were beginning to address them when Police ambushed the gathering.
Only Alphonse was arrested as the other had examinations to sit for.
Alphonse is currently detained at Kyambogo Police station and the students demand that he should be released as soon as immediately.
