Bagiire Sharif alias Young Mandela has been found in a sorry state following his arrest on Tuesday last week.
Bagiire, together with other students, participated in a protest against the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project last Tuesday.
The protest was organised through their umbrella body Students against EACOP Uganda. The protesters were, however, blocked by police and in the process Bagiire was arrested.
Following his arrests, several attempts to find out more about his arrest and whereabouts yielded no positive results till Saturday morning.
Bagiire told his colleagues that visited him on Saturday at his sick bed that he was tortured and brutalised by unknown men till Friday night.
Among the visiting friends was Nkwanga Michael, a former guild aspirant at Kyambogo University.
According to Justice Movement Uganda, a movement Bagiire subscribes to, he was allegedly tortured by state operatives for three days.
“It was today morning that we got news about our arrested brother Bagiire Sharif who waz tortured by the state operatives over his rights to protest against the deadly,” Justice Movement Uganda tweeted.
Bagiire Sharif and other students claim the EACOP project violates human rights and is a danger to the environment.
