Kyambogo University Students have started up an initiative dubbed ‘1k Campaign’ to save lives of starving people of Karamoja.
The campaign kicked started on Wednesday, Jul 20, 2022 at the Banda based campus under the theme, “Students together to Save the starving people of Karamoja.”
According to Julius Kizito, the Finance Manager of the campaign, they are aiming at raising shs. 2 billion with every student from all universities across Uganda contributing shs.1,000.
“Our target is getting 2 million people giving out shs. 1000 each. We believe shs. 2billion can be raised to help these people who are dying of hunger,” he said on Friday afternoon.
Kizito added that, “As concerned students, we realized that there was laxity among people with capacity to lend a hand towards saving lives of Karimajongs.”
Student leaders to this campaign collaborated with Karamoja Students Development Association Kyambogo Chapter to start up this initiative.
“We started it on Wednesday to create awareness among the public, not only do we target students community but even the rest of the public.”
The most affected districts are Kotido where 107, 700 people are estimated to be starving, Napak (81,800), Kaabong (70,000) and Moroto (61,900).
They have so far collected shs. 182,300 since the campaign was first announced on Wednesday.
To date, over 600 people have succumbed to hunger in parts of Karamoja and South Lango region.
