In a letter addressed to the Dean of Students on 4th May 2022, the hall chairpersons of the different halls in Kyambogo University requested her to allow both freshers and continuing students stay in halls of residence for the 19 days short semester break.
The University is expected to complete semester one for 2021/2022 academic year on Sunday 8th May. This is the day the freshers finish their examinations.
This humble request was made after putting into consideration several reasons that impact the students greatly. The transport costs to be incurred by the students who come from very far are so high due to the fact that fuel prices have recently skyrocketed.
Due to the negative effects of COVID 19, the students claim they don’t have much money on them to sustain the high cost of living in and around Kampala City.
The continuing students doing their internship in Kampala argue that most landlords in charge of rentals around Kampala ask for initial payment of three months, a period that is longer than their internship requirement.
Therefore, they requested the Dean of students to allow them stay in the halls of residence most especially Mandela Hall and Nanziri hall at a cheaper cost than they would have incurred on rent outside the university.
In spite of all the reasons given, the Dean of Students has rejected this appeal on grounds that it’s during the holidays that Halls of residence are fumigated. She reminded the students that the University has never allowed students doing Internship to stay in the halls of residence and hence did not reason with them.
The University is expected to close today, Sunday 8th May and Halls of Residence will be out of bounds on Monday 9th May 2022.
All students are reminded to leave by the mentioned date until another semester begins on 28th May 2022.
