Student leaders from Kyambogo University, tabled a petition to the 11th Parliamentary Education Committee demanding for an increment of food and living out allowances for government sponsored students across all universities.
These were led by Hon Canwat Willy (GRC for Government Sponsored students and Ex-Minister for Academics and Professional Affairs), Hon Nkurunziza Alphonse (GRC for the Faculty of Engineering and EX Deputy Guild Prime Minister), H.E Oketcho Peter (President Kyugosa), Mandwa Elijah (GRC School of Management).
The student leaders propose that Lunch, breakfast and supper should be increased to UGX 10,000 from the current UGX 4,000.
This follows proposals by the 10th Parliamentary Educations Committee in 2018 to the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development to have the said allowances increased which later on was considered by the ministry in the National Budget Framework for 2019/2020 but failed to be implemented.
These developments come at a time when the country is experiencing an economic crisis brought about by Covid 19 pandemic that has sparked a rise in the prices of commodities in the country and thus threatening service providers at most varsities to withdraw their services and the initiation of the outsourcing policy specifically at Kyambogo University of which these service providers complain can no longer offer these services at that price.
In an exclusive interview with Hon Canwat Willy, he informed Campus Bee that in a brief interaction with the committee chairperson Hon Twesigye, he promised to have this treated as an official matter and a meeting between the student leaders would be scheduled to discuss the matter extensively.
