Student leaders at Kyambogo University have threatened to mobilise their colleagues and hit the road ways to demonstrate in protest of the ongoing strike by non-teaching staff.
This is after the striking non teaching staff failed to comply with the government directive to report back to work yesterday.
Led by the current shadow head of opposition, the students argue that it is unfair to have the strike continue after government promised to increase their salaries (non-teaching staff) and pay arrears in the next financial year.
“As students we are not going to sit as if we don’t know what to do. We are also going to take action, where by we shall also mobilise our colleagues and come here to demonstrate, not only showing our dis-contention to the university council but also government,” shadow head of opposition said.
The students now plan to hold a meeting today to decide on when to take action though note that action could be today or Friday.
The students further lament that they are and have suffered losses from the higher institute’s closure with many students already falling prey to theft and are losing out on time.
“The semester at Kyambogo has 17 weeks and is already two weeks in and wasted, that means nothing can be covered and the semester has to be shifted to January. We don’t want 2013 scenario back,” an angry leader exasperated.
The non teaching public university staff have been on strike since August 3rd demanding 31bn in salary increment
