Kyambogo University is set to prohibit non students from accessing university internet following its continuous ‘illegal’ usage by residents in the neighbourhood.
Kyambogo University received ICT equipment worth 300 million Uganda shillings to enhance internet services. The equipment is a donation from Research and Education Network of Uganda (RENU).
John Okuonzi, the director of ICT and services at the university, said they have been facing challenges of security and costly bandwidth.
Okuonzi said the equipment will enable them block non students from accessing their internet and as well limit consumption of harmful information such as pornographic content.
“This equipment will help identify who is accessing Wi-Fi and block those who aren’t students from tapping into it. It is also going to strengthen our network in that if a student is trying to access harmful information such as pornography, we shall be able to block the site,” Mr Okuonzi said.
Professor Eli Katunguka, the Vice Chancellor Kyambogo University said that some students and staff are still reluctant when it comes to internet usage and believes the equipment will enable them change their attitudes.
“We still have a challenge of attitude change. When covid hit, we had to switch to e-learning because education had to continue. But some of the students and old staff are hesitant to use these services. We are hoping that this equipment will change attitude.” Prof Katunguka said.
The equipment was presented by Mr Masiga Brian, a network engineer at RENU who highlighted that this (donation) is a step towards boasting education and research in Uganda.
