While addressing the press on the current state of the University, the Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University Prof. Eli Katunguka, yesterday 2nd September, made an appeal to the government to provide more assistance in order to enhance disability inclusion in universities.
This was at a conference held at the University Council room.
He made this humble appeal together with Dr. Ebong, the Coordinator of the Disability Support Services Centre.
This center was established by the University with the primary aim of supporting disability inclusion.
Dr. Ebong’s speech was centered on praising the university’s great achievement with regards to Special needs Education.
“Kyambogo University has excelled in Special needs Education. We now have One hundred seventy six students with disabilities, of whom sixteen are blind, forty seven with low vision, seventeen deaf and fifty eight with physical disability. We train and develop skills among these students with disabilities to make them aquire higher quality education,” Mr. Ebong proudly said.
“The faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation in Kyambogo University is the only one in the entire country offering disability and Special needs Education. But these students need a lot of support. Given the fact that the University’s budget was cut by 20%, we cannot be able to provide all the expensive support and personnel that these students need. As a University, we are trying our best by providing reasonable accommodation for students with disablities. We have adopted ICT which will enable the blind in learning but we need more to enhance disability inclusion, not only at this university but also in other universities,” Prof. Eli Katunguka added.
“We are seeking help from friends, from donors and from the government to assist us support Special needs Education and disability inclusion in all universities of the country,” the Vice Chancellor appealed.
Currently, the university has developed more programmes regarding special needs education at the faculty of Special needs and rehabilitation such as PHD in Special needs Education, Masters in disability Studies, Diploma in sign language and Bachelor of special needs Education.
